Cricket is played across the globe. The game is immensely popular in India, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Scotland, and the West Indies. A total of 24 nations competed in the IX World Cup Cricket competition in 2007, which is held once every four years. In the United States, however, cricket is not so well- known because of lack of exposure to the game. This can change if cricket spreads to one small town at a time. The Charlottesville Cricket Club (CVCC) has been doing its part to popularize the game of cricket in Albemarle County since 2004.

CVCC is comprised of more than 30 players of various ethnicities and backgrounds. The team practices every Wednesday and some Sundays at Darden Towe Memorial Park. We welcome and include enthusiastic local residents in our weekend practice games. Since the formation of the team in 2005, CVCC has been taking part in cricket tournaments in Virginia and North Carolina. In 2006 and 2007, CVCC won two tournaments in Richmond and were the runners-up in a third. Twelve teams competed for each of the above tournaments. CVCC has also participated in the AID cup in North Carolina but with limited success. In summer months, CVCC takes part in the MACC Regional Tournament competing with teams from Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Apart from the statistics and score-sheets, the bigger story has been that the neighboring cities and states have begun to recognize Charlottesville as a cricket-playing city.
